About Westwood Shopping Centre

Westwood Shopping Centre, also known as Westwood Retail Park, at one time was the location of Eastwoods Scrapyard which operated during the 1960s & 1970s. Westwood Shopping Centre replaced the Eastwood Scrapyard site in the 1990s.

In 2004, a planning application was submitted (Z/2004/2742/F) seeking to develop an extension to the existing Westwood Shopping Centre to provide new retail and storage units incorporating a 35,000 sq.ft foodstore along with additional carparking. This application obtained full planning approval on 3rd December 2008. However, the development proposals were not implemented within the 5 year planning period and during 2009 significant changes were made to the accepted contaminated land guidance documents.

In 2011, Johncorp Ltd (Benmore Group), submitted a planning application (Z/2011/1494/F) seeking to develop a proposed extension and alterations to the existing Westwood Centre to provide new car parking, new retail and ancillary storage incorporating a 35,000 ft sq food store. This application was approved on the 26th November 2012.

The proposed development would be developed in three stages. Phase 1 & 2 of the project have been completed. Construction of phase 3 of the project is yet to be started.

In August 2021, Johncorp Ltd submitted a proposal of application notice (LA04/2021/1830/PAN) proposing social housing led, mixed tenure residential development comprising of c. 144 no. dwellings, vehicular access, open space, landscaping and associated site works. The location of this development is on the Phase 3 plot of the Westwood Retail Park masterplan. The proposal of application notice was deemed acceptable.

In December 2021, Johncorp Ltd submitted a planning application (LA04/2022/0140/F) seeking change of use from an indoor trampoline park (Sui Generis) to retail (Class A1) and minor elevational changes associated with the change of use. This application was in relation to Units E-F of Westwood Shopping Centre which previously housed a Airtastic Entertainment & Trampoline park. The units will now be occupied by The Food Warehouse.

As of 2024, Westwood Retail Park comprises many businesses including Asda, Ulster Bank, The Food Warehouse, Jollyes pet store, Harry Corrys, B&M, Modern Tyres and McDonalds.
