About Filthy Quarter
41-49 Dublin Road and 3-5 Ventry Street, also known as the Filthy Quarter, is a collection of nightlife venues including; Filthy McNastys, The Secret Garden, Filthy Chic, The Gypsy Lounge, and Liquor XXX. The site also includes 47 Dublin Road, which is separate from the nightlife venues and is occupied by Boyle Sports bookmakers.
Before the Filthy Quarter, the site was home to many businesses such as Dempseys Bar, William Hill, Billy Beggs Traditional Fish Fryers, Rahmi's Turkish Kebab House, and Nemrut Turkish Kebab House.
In April 1988, a planning application was submitted (Z/1988/2332) proposing the change of use from restaurant to licensed premises at 43-45 Dublin Road. This application was approved in June 1988.
In April 1989, a planning application was submitted (Z/1989/2297) proposing the construction of a 1st-floor extension to provide toilet and bar facilities at 43-45 Dublin Road. This application was approved in May 1989.
In November 1992, Pips International submitted a planning application (Z/1992/2957) proposing an extension and new facade to existing licensed premises at 43-45 Dublin Road. This application was approved in January 1993.
In February 1999, a planning application was submitted (Z/1999/2105) proposing the refurbishment of an existing public house including a re-design of the front facade. This application was approved in July 1999.
In December 2000, The Diamond Group submitted a planning application (Z/2000/2978/F) proposing the demolition of the existing public house & construction of a new mixed-use development incorporating basement-level car parking, bookmakers, 2 storey public house & 9 storey office accommodation. This application was withdrawn in August 2001.
In August 2001, The Diamond Group submitted a planning application (Z/2001/2101/F) proposing the demolition of the existing public house & construction of new mixed-use development, incorporating basement-level car parking, bookmakers, 1 storey public house & 6 storey office accommodation. This application was approved in July 2002, however, construction did not commence.
In August 2003, The Diamond Group submitted a planning application (Z/2003/2006/F) seeking to upgrade the front elevation of the site facing Dublin Road. This application was approved in September 2003.
In March 2010, Jermon Developments submitted a planning application (Z/2010/0372/F) proposing the refurbishment of the ground floor of the existing Public House and alterations to the existing exterior facade at 41-45 Dublin Road. This application was approved in June 2010.
In February 2012, Bachus Inns Ltd submitted a planning application (Z/2012/0223/F) proposing first-floor garden room, extension to the existing external beer garden to the rear of the premises including the provision of galvanised steel staircase. This application was approved in June 2012.
In June 2014, FMN Properties submitted a planning application (LA04/2015/0723/F) proposing a two-storey extension to the rear of the public house, change of use of the ground floor unit to a bar, and work to include a new shopfront. This application was approved in October 2016.
In November 2022, FMN Properties Ltd submitted a Proposal of Application Notice (PAN) (LA04/2022/2076/PAN) proposing the redevelopment of the site to provide a an 11-storey student accommodation block with 210 bedrooms and a ground floor public house.
In April 2023, FMN Properties Ltd submitted a planning application (LA04/2023/3030/F) proposing the development of a 11 storey building comprising a 201 bed Purpose Built Managed Student Accommodation scheme and retail unit. As part of feedback provided, it was recommended that ground floor retail would be better than a public house in terms of noise and general disturbance, and that food retail unit would be welcomed. The future of the bars currently part of Filthy Quarter, such as Ventry Social, Liquor XXX and Filthy McNasty’s, is not yet confirmed.
